Big Cat Tracking Adventures – There are many well-documented health benefits of owning cats or other pets. Perhaps most obviously, they offer friendship. Life on the road can be lonely, especially when you’re first starting out, and bringing a solo companion is a great way to ease the loneliness. Life on the road can also be stressful. You can’t always rely on a spectacular sunset or a spectacular view to soothe your senses. Cats are a great source of relaxation and stress relief, and are great for your overall happiness and well-being.
But most importantly, cats, like most pets, are part of the family. When you hit the road, you want your family with you. However, cats present unique challenges. There’s no one right answer for how to deal with these challenges, but we hope that sharing our problems and solutions can help other RVers feel more confident and comfortable traveling with their cats.

My partner Sushila and I adopted our two cats, Oli and Mango, while living our lives of sticks and bricks. When we decided to hit the road in an RV, we knew they would join us.

If you have cats and plan to move them to the street, your first thought was probably, “What am I going to do with the litter box?” They are dirty, smelly, and, especially in a small area, can really get in the way.
One of our biggest goals was to not have to move the litter box on travel days. Our first six months on the road included a lot (ouch), and we’ve had enough to pick up and get out of the way without including the litter box. We were also concerned that moving the litter box around, especially on moving days, would cause more stress for the cats, and we wanted to avoid that possibility.
Our second goal was to minimize the mess that cats can make tracking litter in the RV. If you’re a cat owner, you’re probably laughing at how pointless this effort is, but still, the fewer times a day I need to clean the litter, the better.
We are the fifth wheel, and we chose to make space in our basement (the storage area under the bedroom) to store the litter box. We cut a hole in the stairs that lead to our room, and a walkway leads the cats to an enclosed area under the litter box.
Why Scientists Use Radio Collars To Study Cats
This method has some disadvantages. First, we lost valuable space in our storage space. Second, it requires more effort initially to create an enclosure for the litter box that prevents cats from roaming freely under the belly of the RV. For us, the benefits far outweigh the costs.
The biggest advantage is that it is out of the garbage can. It has a dedicated space that is usable and accessible whether stationary or on the go. Importantly, we can access the litter box by opening our last litter from the outside, and this greatly reduces the pollution associated with taking out the litter. It also reduces odors inside the RV living space. Finally, this helps reduce litter tracked into the RV because cats are forced to walk a few feet through the litter box before going back inside.
Although our setup is specific to fifth wheels, we’ve seen similar setups using a Class A with a hole in the floor or space under the bed. If you can find a way to give the litter box a dedicated place outside of your living space, it can go a long way in making traveling with your cats more comfortable.
If your cats are anything like us, they prefer to look up at us and find the highest available place to sleep. Our stick and brick house had some nice spots for them, and we wanted to give them something similar in the RV. Our fifth wheel has a large rear window that is the perfect place to mount a cat bed. Of course, we want to be able to close the window shades at night. A nursing cup window seat proved to be a good choice; However, we soon found that sticking and removing the suction cups every day quickly reduced their ability to stay on the window. Instead, we prepared the bed a little so that we could easily cut it from the suction cups, attach them to the window, so that we could close the shades. It’s our low-maintenance solution, and it’s our cats’ favorite resting place.
Cheshire & Wain
Some cats are perfectly happy to spend their entire lives indoors. Ours certainly seemed to be pre-arriving. We tried to get them out a few times, and to say it didn’t go well is an understatement. We know it’s important for our cats to be active, though, and we know that environmental modification is important to their health. The RV doesn’t offer much room for either of them, so we continued to train them to enjoy the outdoors.
We started slowly. A few minutes of harness training here and there; A few minutes of sitting on the RV steps. Before long, they were used to the rigors and joined in exploring the outdoors. Now when they heard the velcro of their harness they ran for the door. They love to move around and explore our changing environment.
However, their love turned into trouble. Our lives and environments don’t always allow for a lot of outdoor time, and the longer we go without taking them outside, the more likely they are to walk out the door and go away on their own.
We started looking for solutions that would allow the cats some outdoor time and space even if we couldn’t take them out for a walk.

We looked for a commercial solution, but nothing fit the bill. Cat tents will not be safe without supervision. A metal enclosure would be secure, but would need to be prohibitively large to reach any of our available windows, or require new mounting points on the side of the RV.
Instead of trying to fix one of the existing products, we created our own enclosure: Catio!
Uses 1” PVC pipes in frame. Some key members are glued together for stability, but others can be easily disassembled for storage. The floor is an outdoor carpet that can be removed and added. Everything is wrapped in screen door mesh that’s strong enough to keep cats in but light and dense. The entire assembly sits between our two slides and is operated by gravity. The cats can access the catio from our bedroom window.
Cats love it! They can lie in the sun, and they can listen and watch the birds. This gives them a safe exit whenever they want. It was plentiful for the cats and beneficial for us.
The Cat Came Back: Canada’s Cougar Comeback
Traveling with our cats has been very rewarding. Trying to keep both them and us comfortable proved to be a challenge at first, but with a few modifications to the RV, we were able to give them more creature comforts with simplicity and low maintenance.
There are many easy ways to make room in your RV. It will be worth it to you and them.
